RESEARCH: ASSIGNMENT 1

VIVIAN MAIER

Vivian Borothy Maier’s photography has changed through the years. A majority of her photographs went unknown for a long time but once they were released, they caught international attention. Her style of photography focused around people and architecture always well as mundane objects. Maier photographed the urban human landscape over the course of three decades. Her preferred subjects were children, the poor, and the elderly, some of them aware of her and some not. She also took a lot of self portraits. We can also see that she liked to use reflection through mirrors or windows in her photographs.  She worked in a black-and-white documentary style until the early 1970s, she then began to take colour photographs with a more abstract approach. The majority of her photos that are portraits as well as landscapes are centered however there are obviously some that differ. Her photograph came from a passion of documenting life. Her photos have recently been discovered in 2007 therefore her motivations are still unclear. For now, we assume she simply took up photography for leisure, never realizing the real beauty she was creating.

WALKER EVANS

Walker Evans photos are black and white. The subject matter was “the vernacular- the indigenous expressions of a people found in roadside stands, cheap cafés, advertisements, simple bedrooms, and small-town main streets”. With the intentions to become a writer Walker eventually used the camera to focus his creativity instead. He wanted "lyricism, irony, incisive description, and narrative structure to be a part of his photography." He created sophisticated, crystal-clear photographs and his work has inspired several generations of artists. His subject matters are often centered.
